The only way to start off the month of March is with a gig at the Hamtramck blowout. The blowout is a huge music event showcasing over 200 local acts, at over 20 venues, during a four day period. There is always a good vibe at the blowout and it's a good chance to get out and see what's going on in the scene. We start off hanging out at the pre-party on Wed. March 3 where virtually every musician playing the blowout is in attendance. It's wall to wall musicians and bands and good times. The next few days, we spend bouncing from venue to venue, with our schedule and map in hand on a quest to check out as many local bands as possible. Finally, Saturday March 6 is upon us and we're geared up for our annual Blowout appearance. For this night we're sharing the bill with Big City Black Out, featuring ex- Trash Brat drummer Craig Cashew as a front man! Pretty cool rock n' roll stuff from the boys. This year, we fell from our previous blowout headlining gigs to the second spot which turned out to be pretty cool. It gave us a chance to hang out with people afterward which we weren't able to do in previous years so that was a lot of fun. For this show we were anxious to unleash our new tunes that we had spent all winter long perfecting. We played just two songs from our Lady Luck record, the rest were all new tunes and we had a blast playing them. The venue was packed, you could barely see through the sea of heads as we blasted through a quick 40 minute set of new shit. Afterwards, we hung out in the back of the venue and met up with all sorts of people. Since the Blowout is held in the city where I once roamed the streets as a teen, a lot of folks from Hamtramck High School showed up. It was so cool to see them there. The next band to play was the all-star line-up of the Skeemin' Nogoods. You got Ron Sakowski (Necros, Laughing Hyenas) Chuck Burns (Seduce, Speedball) and John Speck (Hoarse, Fags) Total balls to the wall, punk rock n' roll. Way cool stuff! And the headliners of the night were Back in Spades, a throwback to the old 70's rock, right in line with the Detroit sound. Cool band. The next weekend we were supposed to play in Milwaukee at the Rock Shop but unfortunately a fire ripped through the place forcing it to close. We wish them the best on the recovery. It's Sunday March 14th, the day of the annual St. Patricks Day Parade and we're booked at the Lager House in Detroit. The parade goes right in front of the venue so the venue was open early and holiday festivities are underway. The place is packed with drunken Irish folk, and drunken folk who wish they were Irish. As the night sets in, a shift of crowd takes place and we welcome the Demons from Sweden to the venue. We take the stage first and it's always fun to play in Detroit at the lager. It's like our home away from home. A dirty little rock joint with a picture of KK Downing above the jukebox. Nothing like it anywhere else in America! The Demons were up next, cuffed pants, black chuck's and enough pomade to grease a ferris wheel. They rocked long and hard and hard and long. Good set from those Swedish boys. And by the end of the month, we find ourselves back at Funhouse Studios with Mike E. Clark where we demo recorded 4 new songs. We had a blast hanging out with Mike for the day and it was really cool to hear some of the new stuff on disc! We can't wait to record a new record and this was a big tease! Until next month, fly your freak flag high and spread the gospel of Broadzilla! |
