First weekend of May and we're off to Pisstburgh. We arrive at the Smiling Moose, a quaint little rock n' roll venue located on Pittsburgh's infamous South Side, in other words, it's where the cool kids hang. The crowd is crammed into the venue for a glimpse at Pittsburghs mavens of metal the Motorpsychos. Many traveling buddies are in attendance at this show including Benjamin Cramer, head of the BZ fanz yahoo group who made the three hour trek from his home town of State College PA. We quickly put him to work schlepping gear around for us! The Motorpsychos do us loud and proud with a dual guitar and triple vocal attack. Sweet stuff ladies! Already in a sweat, we head for the stage, fists pumping and heads swinging, we rip through a set of newbies and oldies. It's butts to nutts in this tiny little venue but that's exactly how we like em'! Afterwards we meet up with some youngin's outside. Not old enough to attend the 21 and over show, but they hang around and listen from outside. Tonight we will carry our bass player from the venue to the RV, seems the Jager has caught up with her once again. Now that's rock n' roll kids! With plenty of time to spare, we hang around Pittsburgh before the next sonic attack set for May 8 at Gooskis in the Polish Hill area of the city. I'll get to the hill part later. We spend the afternoon wandering around the South Side, heading in and out of tiny little shop after shop. I'm telling you, girls like to shop, it's the nature of the beast I suppose. There's record stores, clothing stores and jewelry stores we must hit. Have no money must spend it is our motto. After an exhausting day of shopping, trust me, this shopping stuff is hard work, we run to the hills where attempting to navigate the RV through the neighborhood is a good challenge for Angie. We double park and load gear uphill (these are the kinds of stories people tell their grandchildren in old age - when I was your age, we had to load our gear uphill - and so on and so on) We then drive around the corner and park the RV. Not much can top last nights Smiling Moose show, it was indeed off the hook but we head into the bar hopeful. Attendance is fair tonight with plenty of eager ears. The Psycho chicks plus dude take the stage and rock it only like they can, all psycho style! We quickly set up and proceed to rock the fucking house and kick some ass, but not before we blow the power 3 or 4 times or maybe 5, I lost count. At one point during the guitar solo for Wannabe, the power goes out about 5 times. The power would come back on and we'd quickly try to pick up the song where we left off and BOOM, out go the lights again. Friends scramble to begin unplugging unnecessary items that may drain the juice from the building like oh say the lights! So here we are, da Broadz, in da Dark. No shit. We finished the set in the dark like any band of determined son's a bitches would! We enjoy the next weekend off before returning the welcome to the Motorpsychos in Detroit. It's May 21 and we're set to open for the Misfits at the Machine Shop. But it's early in the day that we learn the Misfits' tour bus has taken a shit on them in the middle of nowhere, making it impossible for them to make the gig in time and therefore their set is cancelled. But like super troopers we arrange to change the show to a free show with opening band Red I Flight, then the Psychos and then the Zillas. It turns out to be a successful night despite the bus mishap and Machine Shop promoters Kevin and Craig promise a reschedule date yet to be announced. So overall, we turned a shitty situation into something positive. It was the Psychos first time at the Machine Shop and they sounded oh so amazing! Back to BZ headquarters for the night where we'll shack up our Pittsburgh friends for the weekend, we wake and head over to Delmar's for breakfast. Ahhhh, delmar's! Then it's off to the Hasting Street Ballroom in Detroit, as both bands are participating in the multi-staged weekend event. It's a rather odd mix of entertainment in a rather odd venue. Running water is scarce and I'm advised by friends to stay out of the bathroom. I do my best and avoid the bathrooms at all costs. It's extremely hot today, there are three stages and we are booked at one of the indoor stages. Psychos go on before us, the crowds are thin, mostly musicians watching other musicians but those are the toughest crowds to play for and both bands do a good job of bringing life to the rock! But it's time to wrap it up and head towards Ypsilanti where the Elbow Room will once again be graced with our presence. Once at the Elbow Room, we do the gear situation thing and then head over to the Tap Room where its burgers are the finest. Once inside we're greeted by a drunk bar patron, he turns out to be Jerry who offers us a round of drinks. He quickly tosses a $100 bill on the table before exiting the venue to harass passersby on the street. We rack up a $50 drink tab and then take the other $50 to the store and stock up with a couple of cases of beer. Thanks Jerry! Back at the Elbow Room, the rock is in full effect courtesy of Strip Club. The Psychos were up next kicking the metal up a notch or two and we polished off the evening of molten metal. We send the Psychos home tired but rocked to the nines. It's now Wednesday May 26 and we head to the Bullfrog in Redford Twp. to take part in the 89X Homeboy on the Road show. The homeboy show is 30 minutes of local music airing every Sunday on 89X. The homeboy on the road show is where 89X brings 3 bands each Wednesday into the Bullfrog for a midweek rock n' roll treat. Tonight it's metal rockers My Favorite Plaid Straight Jacket up first, den da Broadz with a killer 30 minute set! Followed by Detroit's metal gods Forge. Those guys kick ass, solid rock n' metal band. Another late school night never hurt anyone when rock n' roll is involved. And that wraps up the month of May..on to June we go! |
