Ahh, summer has arrived! Brace yourselves, June is a doosie! The wheels start turning June 3 as we head towards the windy city. We arrive early and manage to snag a good parking spot, no easy feat for a 32 foot RV and trailer in the busy streets of Chicago, but some sweet talking to the parking police and we slide in like a hot knife through butter. With some time to kill before the rock starts, Kim and I hop in a cab and head over to the infamous Alley, the department store for rock stars. We proceed to spend too much money on too much cool stuff, but women cannot rightfully shop without spooning out oodles of cash so shop and spend we go! We decide to walk a little before hopping in a cab and heading back to Cal's bar, part liquor store, part rock for the masses. We're playing with Bible of the Devil tonight, a Chicago band whom we've played with in Detroit before. Tonight we are opening and we begin setting up in a small corner of the room, sans stage and soundcheck - doin' it all DIY style, plug and play. Amps to eleven and we rock the curious onlookers into oblivion. Bible of the Devil follow our lead and proceed to make a mess of the tiny little club. Cal's is a fine establishment. We hope to return! We immediately head out of the city and towards Racine where we stop about half way and turn in for the night. We crash in the RV and wake up at a rest area/gas station type of place. I wake up first and head for coffee, the weather is pleasantly calm and warm this morning so I decide to bring out the blanket and pillow and chill outdoors while the rest of the group saws logs in the RV. A couple hours later and we're back on the road. Once into the fine cheese state of Wisconsin, we head towards lake Michigan where we'll spend the next couple of hours chilling waterfront at a roadside park. Nice way to spend a beautiful day. As the evening sets upon us, we head for check-in at the hotel where we are all anxious to snag a shower. Then it's off to McAuliffes Pub for another visit with JJ and the fine folks of Racine. Once loaded in, owner JJ offers to shuttle our asses over to the Greekfest where food and people are plentiful. We gorge on saginaki and shish-ka-bob and then head back to the club where our friends Nuna are about to take the stage. A great rock n' roll band who continues to grow each time we see them play. Always a pleasure to share the bill with good talent! It's our turn to take the stage and a sweaty mess we quickly become. It's always the folks of Racine who manage to sneak out songs from our catalogue that we haven't performed in years. Always a fun time with JJ and Co. in Racine. We load out and head back to the hotel where we get some rest for the night. Up early and back on the road we head back through the treacherous traffic of Chicago and emerge in the fine state of Indiana where we make a pit stop for some illegal fireworks! Well, they're not illegal to sell in Indiana but they are illegal in Michigan and us being rock n' roll rebels well, we couldn't help ourselves. We spend an hour or so plucking through a warehouse of explosives and then it's back in the RV and we're headed for Battle Creek. We arrive at the Planet Rock, a place we've played once before while touring with Skid Row. Tonight we share the bill with local rockers Culprit. A nice group of jesus freaks open up the show, they were a good band with meaningful songs full of positive messages, they looked all Hot Topic and stuff, they were nice guys and cool to play with, I just can't remember their name, ugh! But they reminded me of Cartman's (South Park) christian band. Forgive me fellas! We were up next sandwiched in between the two fine locals. We obliterated the stage but I'm not sure many of those folks knew what hit them. We managed to impress the musician folk in attendance, but it were the rest of the "play something we know" types in the crowd that proved to be a challenge. Nevertheless, it is always fun to dish it out raw to an unsuspecting crowd. Culprit picked up round three for the night performing a mix of originals and covers, the folks really like those guys at this bar. Next up is a trip up to Mt. Pleasant Michigan where the fine folks attending CMU are in beer drinking abundance. We are sharing the stage tonight with a band called Goose Gator who are apparently from our neck of the woods but it is tonight that we meet for the first time, 3 hours north of Detroit. They take the stage first and whip up some rock n' roll booty for us. Oh and their mic stands, you must see their mic stands. With school out for the summer, there is a smaller than usual crowd but nevertheless and eager crowd. We spread the gospel of Broadzilla rock throughout the bar and leave yet another smoldering ruin in our wake! Back home we head over about 30 minutes to Redford Twp. Not much happens in Redford so we brought the rock with us today. Our friends in Blasternaut asked us to join them on the bill, it was a last minute show so we figured why sit home when we can play the Bullfrog in Redford! Bullfrog is one of those bars that used to be a cover bar but they're trying turn that around by brining in more original oriented bands so who better dan da broadz! We lay it down loud and proud and clear the stage in record time. We're really getting good at record breaking set-up and tear down time. Blasternaut, a favorite with the local ladies capped off the evening with some powerful pop oriented rock. Good stuff from those guys. We're taking gigs like junkies on crack, it's June 16 and we head out to the Elbow Room in Ypsilanti where we'll be sharing the stage with Bible of the Devil, Temptress and KK Dirty Money. KK is up first, a guy girl experimental duo, pretty interesting and solid stuff from those two. Temptress follows with a nice blend of Trash Brats-esque rock n' roll. Bible plays third laying down the law of metal like only those dual guitar solos can! And finally, we keep the kids up late on a school night with more loud and fast music! It's 10 a.m. June 19 and we're already on our way to get situated at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights Michigan for the annual bash of all bashes, Harley Fest. We arrive early and snag a nice parking spot close to the stage. Harley Fest is as you might imagine, an all day event filled with Bikers, Booze, Babes and music. Everyone from a slew of local bands to bands like Clutch and Trapt are on the bill. Record breaking crowds are already in attendance at the fest, hosted by Detroit's number one rock station WRIF. It's early and we decide to take a walk around the grounds to scope things out. We quickly run into all sorts of people we know and it's barely 11 a.m. We snag some free swag from BDT's in exchange for a plug - go visit the folks at BDT's for all your fine smoking needs. Back at the RV, we're greeted by the doc of rock Doug Podell (WRIF DJ) where we do an interview with Podell's daughter for her cable TV program. Fun times. Bikes begin rolling in, crowds begin to increase, sun burns are underway and we anxiously await our turn on stage. Of course no stage entrance is grandeur than riding in on the back of three hot motorcycles courtesy of three cool cats! Angie, Kim and I hop on board and proceed to rumble through the pavilion full of people, some wondering what the hell is going on while others dig the slick entrance. Once on stage, the crowd pushes towards the front and we lay down the rock loud and proud in the Detroit fashion! It's a quick 30 minute set, all killer no filler!! Afterwards, we spend hours back at the RV selling merch and doing the meet and greet thing. Then it's back to checking out the scene and the tunes so we head over to watch Clutch. Righteous! The sun falls and we wrap things up for the night, another successful Harley Fest. Already looking forward to next year. And rounding out a long and exhausting June, we head back into Ypsilanti for some Monday night Metal at the Elbow Room. This time we've been invited to share the stage with the SHOCKER! This is Jennifer Finch from L7's new band and they smoked! Ypsi area rockers Glori5 opened up the show with their dirty sonic rock n' roll attack. Loved it. We slid in second with another quick 30 minute killer rock n' roll set and Jennifer and Co. polished off the night with a blistering set. There were the few but faithful fist-pumping rockers in attendance and overall a great way to end a solid month of rock n' roll. See you on the flipside. |
