September baby!!
And it’s time for Rock for Choice, Sept. 9 at the Blind Pig in
Ann Arbor. Every now and again you gotta give back and what better reason.
It was a school night and there were several bands on the bill this
evening giving us a chance to share the stage with a wide variety of
acts. It’s nice to do that once in a while instead of playing
with the same bands all the time. Lots of folks came out for the cause
making it a grand celebration of music and generosity. A beautiful thing.
And we love the Blind Pig, I once saw Nirvana there back when no one
cared who they were. Ahh, the memories.
Next up was a long awaited return to the Toledo area for a gig at Headliner’s
Sept. 10. We seem to always miss the mark in Toledo, either that or
they just don’t like rock n’ roll in the Ohio armpit. Whatever
the case, ever since the Bottle Rocket closed, our Toledo days are numbered.
The venue, had just suffered a car crash and was temporarily closed
while the repairs were done. It re-opened just days before our scheduled
show but I’m quite sure nobody in Ohio knew. Thanks to Jeni Zilla
and her crew, we were able to throw down a set of rock tunes but I’m
quite sure we won’t be going there again.
Heading out to the cheese state on the anniversary of the deadliest
attack on American soil, we’ve got lots of ammunition for the
Milwaukee folks stored up. Always, a trip to Wisconsin requires a stop
at the Mars Cheese Castle, where cheese is plentiful and the sasparilla
is cold. We spend too much money, eat cheese and then head to the city.
Once at the venue we’re greeted by Brian, who is by far the coolest
bar owner. This is his new venue after his old venue caught fire. As
a tribute, Brian had the walls painted black with flames. Very cool
and befitting for his situation. The club was super cool, set up where
it was split in half with the stage on one side and the bar on the other.
And people, there were people there….weeeeee!!! This most certainly
made up for the Toledo disappointment the night prior. The rock was
on, we played with some uber cool bands of the ut most rawk. A good
time with the cheeseheads was had.
Finishing up the month, we head 3 hours north of Detroit to Rubbles
on the campus of CMU. I don’t have to tell you how ready to rock
the college kids are. Rubbles shows are always off the hook. Our newly
made friends in Goose Gator opened the bill and it was rad. You should’ve
seen these guys, they had these two huge mic stands, one made from a
chainsaw and the other made from the front end of a motorcycle. Totally
cool. We love them.
